Cyclone Mocha gears up for catastrophic landfall - May 14, 2023
Cyclone Mocha reached Category 5 status last night local time, and has maintained since then. The storm currently contains winds near 160 miles per hour (255kph) and an estimated pressure of 915mb. Landfall is expected to occur around lunchtime or early afternoon near the border with Myanmar and Bangladesh. Catastrophic impacts may occur along the coast, with up to 20 feet of storm surge, as well as extreme winds and heavy rainfall accumulations of over 300mm possible.
The storm will weaken slightly before landfall, before falling apart very quickly after moving inland. Mocha should dissipate by tomorrow afternoon.
