STORYLINE:
Residents in Myanmar’s Rakhine State worked to repair damage to their communities on Tuesday, two days after Cyclone Mocha tore through coastal areas.
About two dozen deaths were reported by local media but many people are still missing.
A relief worker in camps for internally displaced Rohingya Muslims, Sahat Khasin, told the Associated Press by phone that he had helped bury 11 bodies in a cemetery in Sittwe, the hardest-hit city.
Mocha made landfall near Sittwe township, with winds blowing up to 209 kilometres (130 miles) per hour.
It had weakened to a tropical depression by midday Monday.
Strong winds injured more than 700 of about 20,000 people who were sheltering in sturdier buildings on the highlands of Sittwe township, such as monasteries, pagodas and schools, according to a leader of the Rakhine Youths Philanthropic Association in Sittwe.
He asked not to be named due to fear of reprisals from the authorities in the military-run country.
Video from the city on Tuesday showed extensive damage to buildings including homes, shelters and a temple, as well as uprooted trees and fallen power lines.
The nation’s most destructive storm in a decade brought widespread flash floods and power outages.
Information from the affected areas has been hard to obtain because telecommunication facilities were damaged by the storm’s high winds.
Independent confirmation is difficult in normal times because the military restricts the media.
