Today is the 119th anniversary of the birth of Carl Gustav “Peter” Hempel (08 January 1905 – 09 November 1997), who was born in Oranienburg, Germany, on this date in 1905.
Hempel was a philosopher of science who brought his analytical acumen to bear upon the problems of the problems of the philosophy of history. Hempel saw traditional historical explanation wanting, and argued that historical explanation take the form of the covering law model, a deductive-nomological explanation of historical events derived from laws and the conditions of the event. Part of the reason that traditional historical explanations have been wanting is due to their being incomplete, which Hempel also addresses.
