The aim of the institute is to preserve the language and culture of Tibet. The chairman of the institute is the 14th Dalai Lama. The institute is named after the summer residence of the Dalai Lamas, Norbulingka, in Lhasa, Tibet, and the main building of the institute resembles the architecture of the palace in Lhasa. In 1754, the 7th Dalai Lama founded the Norbulingka complex during a time of political instability in Tibet, establishing institutes for the arts and sciences to ensure their continued development. In 1995, the Norbulingka Foundation was established to preserve traditional arts, especially institute operates two hotels. One is located on the campus of the institute, the other is in McLeod Ganj, near the residence of the Dalai Lama. The Institute’s Arts Centre offers courses in Tibetan statue making, thangka painting, appliqué and tailoring, wood carving and other Academy of Tibetan Culture, opened in October 1997, offers a six-year course of higher education in Tibetan studies, covering subjects such as philosophy, poetry and literature, English, world history, art history and relevant contemporary studies. Norbulingka Institute Temple (Deden Tsuglakhang) On the campus of Norbulingka Institute is the two-storey Seat of Happiness Temple (Deden Tsuglakhang), built in 1985 amid Japanese-style gardens. It is famous for its 1,173 wall paintings of Buddha images, frescoes of all the Dalai Lamas, and chronicles of the life of the 14th Dalai Lama. In the main hall of the temple is a four-metre-tall gilded copper statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, made by the institute’s sculptor Pemba Dorje. Around the temple are workshops of artisans and apprentices creating various items that can be purchased in the Norbulingka Institute’s gift shop or exhibition hall. Proceeds from sales are distributed to benefit Tibetan refugees. The Losel Doll Museum contains a diorama depicting scenes from Tibetan life using small dolls in traditional costumes. Not far from the institute is the Dolma Ling Buddhist monastery and the Gyuto monastery, the temporary residence of the 17th Karmapa Urgyen Trinley Dorje.
