Baron Roman von Ungern-Sternberg was a Baltic German noble, a monarchist and a fierce anti-Communist who arose to prominence in the forces opposing the Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War when he wrested control of the Mongolian capital of Urga from occupying Chinese forces. During Ungern’s endeavors he gained notoriety for his uncompromising brutality towards both his enemies and his own men.
