CME Impact: A G3 (Strong) Geomagnetic Storm Just Hit Earth’s Magnetic Field - Aurora Alert
G3 Geomagnetic Storm Levels were reached at 17:46 UTC (13:46 ET) on 17 Aug 2024 due to influence from the CME associated with the X flare that left the Sun on August 14th. Although the CME that passed Earth was expected, the intensity of the storm was not. The solar wind is showing a nice spike in plasma density and the speed increased again to near 470 km/s. Should the Bz tip south, a prolonged period of storming could potentially be observed.
What is a strong geomagnetic storm?
A large disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field. It often varies intensity between lower levels and strong storm conditions over the course hours during the duration of the event.
Possible Technology Effects
Infrastructure operators have been notified to mitigate any possible impacts. Some risk for controllable power fluctuations in the power grid. Possible, slight risk of various satellite operations’ effects. Intermittent GPS degradation possible.
Aurora may be visible as low as Illinois and Ore
