Enjoying a day at the range with the PPS-43 submachine gun!
The PPS (Pistolet-pulemoyot Sudayeva, translated to mean “Sudayev’s submachine gun) is a family of submachine guns developed by Alexei Sudayev at the beginning of World War II as a low cost firearm for reconnaissance units, vehicle crews and support personnel.
The PPS-43 entered into service in 1043 as a replacement to the PPSh-41. By using stamped sheet metal parts and simpler manufacturing methods, the Russian military was able to increase production while reducing costs. The PPSh-41 was never fully replaced, but the PPS-43 saw service from 1943 until 1946, and would go on to be used by 19 other countries for years after the war.
Originally chambered in 9x18 Makarov, the newer version seen here is chambered in 9mm and fires at a very slow rate of fire of about 500-550 rounds per minute from an open bolt. The gun maintains an adequate level of accuracy out to about 200 meters, and is lightweight and easy to use.
