The pre-fight highlight reel of Sugiya shows a typical Japanese fighter; a hard-working offensive fighter getting results based on determination and a grasp of the basics. Coupled with the wizard Esparragoza’s laidback approach and the challenger’s consistency sees him have some moments of success, buckling the champ’s legs in the 4th, and after a sustained offensive dispay of laser guided punches see’s the champ’ score two knockdowns in the 6th, overmatched Sugiya does it again, buzzing Esparragoza with an overhand right!
Eventually the talent of Esparragoza signs through, and he shows he’s levels above, beating the brave challenger down and out in the 10th. Entertaining enough fight, that makes me think Fenech would’ve had his way with Esparragoza had they fought.
