Why does playing music on orbit improve the well-being of cosmonauts on long-duration missions?
That is what Russian space psychologists studied many years ago. Since 1978, a lot of musical instruments have been brought to the International Space Station as part of the overall health support program. Those include acoustic guitars, flutes, keyboards and even bagpipes. You can even find some videos of astronauts’ musical experiments on the Internet, like David Bowie’s song “Space Oddity“ recorded by former astronaut Commander Chris Hadfield while aboard the ISS. Today astronauts also come to the ISS with their personal selection of music that they listen to during their workday by means of various devices. They say it makes them feel more at home or more energetic, helps wake up in the morning or relax after a hard day.
