Aviation HIGHLIGHTS: MiG Killer, F-16, F-35 & Mirage at LUKE AFB
Dear friends,
on our latest trip, we flew to the USA. We hope you enjoy our footage:
We visited the Fightertown Luke AFB, with the Air Education and Training Command. Therefore, the Base is used to train upcoming Fighter pilots, mostly in the F-35, but also in the F-16. Many of the F-16s that belong to Top Aces, 309th FS and 310th FS have an interesting history.
TOP ACES F16A
The story begins in 1978, built in the US, the F-16 was planned to be delivered to the Iran Air Force in 1980 as part of the program Peace Zebra. After the cancellation of the delivery of the F-16, the aircraft got delivered to the Israeli Air Force on 5th May 1981, as part of the program Peace Marble I. The F-16 registered as 260 was part of Israeli Air Force Squadron IDFAF 253. During her service with the Israeli Air Force, the F-16 got the famous Netz Camouflage Livery, which fits the Israeli landscape. The F-16A was later also assigned to Squadrons IDIAF 110 and IDIAF 116. In 2015 the aircraft got stored and six years later the airframe got sold to Top Aces. After being re-registrated the F-16A is currently based at Luke AFB and is, since the day arriving at KLUF, used as an Aggressor to train upcoming fighter pilots.
USAF F-16s:
Delivered in 1991 to the 19th Test Fighter Wing at Shaw Air Force Base, the airplane flew many training missions in US Airspace.
In 1992, 90-0778 was then deployed to Saudi Arabia to take part in patrolling a No-Fly-Zone, a mission called “Southern Watch“, in Iraq. On December 27th 1992 four F-16s took off into the skies of Saudi-Arabia, 90-0778 was one of them, the mission was to log flight hours for upcoming maintenance. While a nearby four-ship Formation of F-15 and an E-3 AWACS detected several aircraft engaging. Two of the four F-16s were sent towards the direction of one closer coming MiG-25. After having visual clearance on the armament of the MiG, the pilot received the clearance to shot down the MiG-25. After releasing an AIM-120C AMRAAM, the missile destroyed the MiG-25, marking the first US F-16 and AMRAAM kill.
Another interesting paint scheme on the F-16, is on the F-16C Block 42 J 90-0768, which received the P-47 Passionate Patsy Livery that was used in World War II by the 310th FS. The Livery was applied to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the AETC.
The third paint scheme which can be seen at Luke AFB is from the 309th FS “Wild Ducks“ and is also painted on a F-16C. It celebrates the unit and the 80th Anniversary of the 309th FS, also based at Luke AFB.
