Press Release from Dublin Jazzers for Gaza
Appalled by the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe caused by the war in Gaza, Dublin-based guitarist Eamon Moran gathered a group of Ireland’s finest jazz musicians together to record a version of “Mawtini” which was until 1996 the national anthem of Palestine. “Mawtini” translates from Arabic as “My Homeland”. Writer Billy Ó hAnluain was invited to contribute a spoken word poem to the piece.
On the day of the recording, Moran rallied the musicians by saying, “Wouldn’t it be great to get the Palestinian national anthem to number one?” It is a rare example of the Irish jazz community taking such a stand on a pressing global issue.
The track entitled “Lifelines/Mawtini” is being released this month on Bandcamp and across all other digital platforms. All proceeds from the sale of the single will go to Médicine sans Frontiéres who are engaged in vital medical work in Palestine and overseeing the transport of essential medical supplies to Gaza.
The music, words, and video celebrate the Palestinian people and their culture while also drawing urgent attention to the devastation being visited upon them in the present conflict.
“Lifelines/Mawtini” is also accompanied by a video of compiled footage very kindly donated by Ed Godsell and a number of Palestinian Citizen Journalist.
Artwork, Youtube Channel & Bandcamp graphics by Ronnie Brannigan.
The musicians on the track are Ciaran Wilde, Brendan Doyle, Conor Murray, Derek Whyte, and Eamon Moran.
