ごちそうさま（でした） Gochisōsama (deshita) Written in Kanji: ご馳走様（でした） What it originally meant: Thank you for dispatching all the horses. Centuries ago, preparing a feast called for dispatching servants on horses in all directions to gather the ingredients. The phrase ごちそうさまでした was used by guests after the meal, to thank the host for all the trouble he/she had gone through.
