The great Lilli Lehmann (1848-1929), one of the outstanding and most admired of 19th century sopranos, in a rather remarkable rendition of Violetta’s first act aria from La Traviata. Lehmann was well ahead of her time in many ways as far as vocal production is concerned. Her approach to high notes is a case in point; she floats them, even if the music is dramatic in nature. She does not try to carry the heavier middle or lower tones into the upper register as some did, thus avoiding the “whooping“ sound
