Conilon

This movie was made during the 2nd Congress of Coffee Tasters in Brazil in October 2023. Our goal was to tell you more about conilon, the rising star of the coffee industry. We are grateful to the key experts in the coffee industry, who shared their vision. Vanusia Nogueira, director of International Coffee Organization, sees the global trend for canephoras due to climate change issues, which is supported by the growing interest from the customers side, as the quality of canephoras is growing year to year. Brazil DOES know how to create infrastructure for quality breakthrough. Silvio Leite, the co-founder of Cup of Excellence, shared his memories of how this legendary competition started and where it moved the industry in 25 years. We believe that canephoras will follow the path, which means that their quality is going to grow further. Otherwise, for Brazil it would be hard to compete in the international market. Lucas Louzada Pereira (IFES) shared his vision of how canephora strategies of India and Vietnam differ from Brazil. So, Brazil chose the quality way. But what is quality in general and for big and small producers specifically? This is what we explored together with Renata Vaz (representing a huge traditional cooperative Cooabriel), Lucas Venturim (one of the farmers, who gave birth to the concept of specialty conilon and our first supplier of conilon microlots) and Farmers Coffee team, lead by Derio Brioschi. Conilon by itself has been in the market for quite some time, but we believe this is the right moment to start telling a 5-dollar conilon from a 10-dollar one (examples given in spot prices). In the end Enrique Anastacio, professor representing EMBRAPA, gave us some party tips and more ideas on which coffee fits which consumption context based on caffeine content.
