Zoe Wanamaker features as Ranyevskaya in Andrew Upton’s new version of Chekhov’s classic play. Set at the start of the twentieth century, it captures a poignant moment in Russia’s history as the country rolls inexorably towards 1917. Ranyevskaya returns, more or less bankrupt, after ten years abroad. Back home, she luxuriates in a world of denial about the hostile forces outside. She and her brother snub a lucrative scheme to save the family estate and the fate of their beloved orchard is sealed. The Cherry Orchard was captured by National Theatre Live in 2011.
