Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna of Russia, third daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Fyodorovna, known as the playful and romantic child, too young to work as a nurse but who still cared for wounded soldiers in the war and was fascinated by the military. Marriage and family were her highest hopes. She was massacred with her family by the Bolsheviks in 1918 and was later canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church as a passion bearer.
