’Hyksos’ sphinxes

Sphinxes are mythical creatures which represent several crucial aspects of Ancient Egyptian royalty, such as strength, might and furiousness of the king or a god. They are known throughout all the Ancient Egyptian history. Typical sphinx has the body of a lion and a human head often surmounted with a royal ’nemes’ headdress, just like the well-known Great Sphinx in Giza. However, the four examples found in 1860 Tanis by Auguste Mariette display some different features.
