11th Harmonic Chorale - Preliminary Sketches (Just Intonation/Microtonality)

This is yet another fragment exploring a tuning lattice built on the 3rd and 11th harmonics. I’m a big believer in these tuning lattices for creating comprehensible harmonic structures and the feeling of movement, and hopefully you can feel some of that here. A tuning lattice is a pretty simple thing - the way I do it, we have a stack of perfect 5ths on the Y axis, representing the 3rd harmonic, and we have a row of what are effectively quartertones on the X axis, representing the 11th harmonic. It’s a great visual representation of very real harmonic relationships. My method from that point is to create common tone progressions as well as harmonic variety by essentially drawing shapes on the lattice. In this case the shapes cover three “squares“ which means they represent triads. This is just a fragment, but if you find this sort of thing interesting, maybe it will grow to a whole piece some day!
