Griffith’s torture is a pivotal point in Berserk’s story, as it is preceded by Guts’ departure and was succeeded by the Eclipse.
Geiffith is kept alive for an year, during which he had been heavily tormented through physical torture, which consequently resulted in a broken mental state.
His torturer seems to enjoy it. He does it for the fun of it. And that’s why the king of Midland chose him.
All actions seem unforgivable after Griffith’s torture. His, those the king, those of his comrades, and most importantly Guts. Having been through such a horrible experience, one finds it hard to feel anything less than malice and vengeance.
From the point of view of Griffith, it becomes more understandable, why he would do such a horrendous act, like sacrificing his own comrades during the Eclipse.
