Mystical Fighter, originally released in Japan as Maō Renjishi (魔王連獅子, Demon King Renjishi) is a beat ’em up game for the Sega Mega Drive. There is no story presented in the game itself, not even the customary text intro. The only non-functional text in the game refers to the final boss as the DARKSIDE KABUKIMASTER, but that’s all we’re told. Being an action game from the early ’90s, this isn’t a big deal. The manual tells us that about 300 years ago, the legendary White Lion and his palette-swapped second player alter ego Red Lion, otherwise known as the Mystical Fighters (and possibly the LIGHTSIDE KABUKIMASTERS), were summoned to repel the invasion of the Mystical Kingdom by the Evil Kabuki Lord.
