“Do Wah Diddy Diddy“ was written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, who wanted to recreate the success of their earlier song “Da Doo Ron Ron“. They originally recorded the song as “Do-Wah-Diddy“ with The Exciters in 1963, but the track only reached #78 on the charts.
Manfred Mann, a British group, began performing the song and recorded their own version, which included an extra “Diddy“ in the title. Their cover became a huge hit and reached #1 in several countries.
The original version of the song was produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller but was not successful. When Barry and Greenwich decided to record the song as The Raindrops, they learned that Manfred Mann’s version was already on its way from England.
