Tibetan filmmaker Pema Tseden on “Balloon“ and the rise of Tibetan cinema

Pema Tseden was the first-ever Tibetan student admitted to the renowned Beijing Film Academy, after applying for a scholarship in 2002. Since then, he has established himself as one of the region’s most compelling and interesting cinematic voices, becoming the frontman for the emergence of Tibetan New Wave, a grouping of arthouse directors that exemplify life in Tibetan areas. His new film, Balloon, revolves around a pastoral family, with mother and father Drolkar and Dargye, whose way of life is put in jeopardy by the stringent fines that will accompany the birth of another child.
