Mechelen originated as a settlement around an estate that in 1215 was donated by Henry III, duke of Limburg to the Order of John. In the 14th century the glory came into the possession of the lord of Wittem, but a part of the village, together with the Commandery of the Order, remained an enclave within the glory. In 1579 and in 1588 the monastery and the farmstead were destroyed by fire, on which the Saint Johns left for Aachen in 1588. They have since leased their farm. All this came to an end in 1796. Mechelen became the main town of the municipality of Wittem, until the end of 1998 it was closed to form the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem together with Gulpen.
In 1803 Mechelen separated itself as an independent parish from the parish of Wahlwiller. In the years
