Spirogyra - St. Radigunds 1971 (UK, Prog Folk) Full Album

Folk rock band from Canterbury (but not part of the Canterbury Scene). The ensemble’s musical style is a mixture of English folk music of the Elizabethan era, folk rock, and progressive rock. The term romantic folk rock was used to define their original style. Formed by vocalist/guitarist Martin Cockerham, vocalist Barbara Gaskin, bassist Steve Borrill and Julian Cusack (flute, piano), the band gained experience performing in campuses and folk clubs. . They mainly used acoustic instruments to perform their fragile and peaceful songs, inspired by the fairy tales of the Middle Ages. With Gaskin’s charismatic presence and voice at the forefront, and their creative brain Cockerham, the ensemble’s excellent live work secured a recording contract with B&C. First album - St. Radigunds - was released in 1971. (St. Radigunds Street is the street in Canterbury, at number 5 where the group met). Chamber, informal sound, unusual melodies, Barbara Gaskin’s voice - all this attracted the attention of both critics and the public to the ensemble; The disc sold over 100 thousand copies, which is an achievement for such non-commercial music. Observers stated that Spirogyra is one of the leading teams in British folk rock. All three of the band’s albums featured guest appearances from drummer Dave Mattacks of Fairport Convention.
