Practicing classical longsword techniques using a heavy 136cm Grain Leaf Sabre (苗刀). This video shows repetition of a basic combination, with changing emphasis, and a few different variations. Once a weapon’s fundamental movements have been learned it’s useful to experiment and adapt technique based on your own experience with the weapon, and individual body structure.
The Miao Dao is a Chinese long sword of the Republican era that can be wielded with one or both hands. While held one handed, like a broadsword, it can attack distant targets. When fighting double handed, both the arms and waist can be applied with full force. It is similar in appearance to the more commonly known Japanese Katana but usually has a significantly longer blade and extended hilt. This obviously provides increased range. Most interesting is the unusual ability to apply traditional staff and spear principles using a saber. For example, pushing or pulling of the lower hand on hilt creates great leverage or adds to downward cutting power, similar to flick up and downward strike with a staff.
Hope all can enjoy objectively. Footage shot in West London using a Sony NEX-VG30.
