Clarinet d’Amore Reimagined

An instrument that was only in use for about 110 years (ca. 1740-1850) has now returned to both modern and historical music scenes. The clarinet d’amore (also spelled d’amour) was a clarinet most often pitched in G with a curved neck made of brass or wood or straight barrel in the case of higher clarinets d’amore, and of course the pear shaped bell, pavillon d’amour (FR) or Liebesfuss (DE), roughly translated as ’love bell’. Most music that survives today is written in G, thus the make of instrument pitched in G and the otherwise rare clarinet transposition make a sound argument for this modern instrument’s and hopefully future standard transposition. A revival of performing on clarinets d’amore is also occurring in the early music scene and it is well worth checking out the work of Vlad Weverbergh in this area.
