The exhibition ‘Salvaged Time,’ on view at The Noguchi Museum, New York, February 23–May 15, 2022, explores how Isamu Noguchi found expressive potential in the full life of materials, through his creative reuse of quarry fragments, recontextualized millstones, driftwood, and the imperfections of individual stones. In this video, Matthew Kirsch, curator of ’Salvaged Time,’ highlights key works that reveal how Noguchi incorporates cast-offs and ‘beautiful waste’ from stonecutting and other aspects of his sculptural process, illuminating his appreciation for stone as an index of time.
