Storm Arwen Was More Powerful Than Expected, UK

The Met Office had issued its highest level warning for wind across the east coast of Scotland and North-East England - with concerns there could be damage caused to buildings and a danger to life from flying debris. As of 22:00 the strongest gust recorded was 78mph (125 km/h) at Inverbervie, Aberdeenshire. There has been sleet across parts of Scotland and northern England but so far heavier snow has been confined to the higher ground. About 25,000 homes in Scotland were left without power, according to Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, while the UK Northern Power Grid also reported outages in north-east England and there were also some outages in Northern Ireland.
