Fretless Microtonal Fingerstyle Bass Grooves (No Thumb)

Funky good times on my fretless Cortex bass without the trusty lobster claw! I usually gravitate strongly towards plucking with my thumb, but for this video I’m grooving with just the other fingers trying some new stuff, that surely was great fun! Love freestyling on a fretless, it’s not my intent here to play perfect within the 12 tone perspective, I like the tension, melancholy and microtonal dissonance between fretless notes. Many cultures have richly explored this, so much good stuff out there. Yes I do take a different approach when playing with other melodic instruments, but these fretless solo pieces are just way too fun to only colour between the lines, this is called a Lab for good reason! Here I also tried to control the string vibration when plucking hard, getting that natural distortion of the string slamming against the fingerboard, without frets that makes for some interesting sounds, I’ll definitely keep experimenting :) I’m playing my fretless Cortex bass strung up with Ernie Ba
