Aponogeton madagascariensis is in Tropica’s Medium category and is supplied as a bulb in 1-2-Grow! cups. It needs moderate to strong lighting to get the best results and does best in cooler water temperatures up to 24 degrees Celsius. CO2 injection is considered essential, as well as regular dosing of micro and macronutrients, with it being susceptible to iron deficiency in particular. It’s prefers softer, more acidic water, as well as strong levels of circulation. A nutrient-rich substrate is also important with Tropica Nutrition Capsules being useful to provide extra nutrients. Like other Aponogeton species it propagates via seeds from its flower,s. These are released in a waterproof pod that floats for 24-28hrs, then splits allowing the seedlings to sink to the substrate to root.
The majority of Aponogetons are wild collected from Madagascar in the dry season. Unfortunately the bulbs are often damaged during transit, which leads to unhealthy or dying plants in the aquarium. They are often also treated with toxic pesticides. Thankfully Tropica now produce Aponogeton madagasciensis in their Limited Edition 1-2-Grow range, which gives zero risk of pests and pesticides, and reduces the carbon footprint of shipping wild collected stocks. Our tissue cultured plants are also readily adapted to grow in the aquarium with more leaves and a better compact growth.
