Lugansk Forgotten Children Little Darina’s Story

‘Amputation really scares me!’ says Anna Ivanova, little Darina’s mother. The family lives close to Lugansk. Darina was born with a congenital lower limb abnormality. She can’t stand on her feet and walk. Anna does her best to make her daughter happy and really wants her daughter to be able to use her legs. Anna had almost nobody to speak to about her daughter’s condition: ‘There is a shortage of doctors. We have only two pediatricians, three nurses, and one ophthalmologist.’ For quite a long time she hoped that the disorder could be corrected through surgery. She found out more about the girl’s condition, after visiting a doctor from the Russian ‘Road of Life’ foundation. She was advised to have Darina’s limbs amputated so the girl could use prostheses. However, the operation Darina needs can cost several million rubles – an unaffordable sum for a single mother. But the doctors from the Moscow charity gave Anna hope. Семья живет недалеко от Луганска. Дарина родилась с врожденной аномалией нижних конечностей. Она не может стоять на ногах и ходить. Анна делает все возможное, чтобы дочка была счастлива, и очень хочет, чтобы дочка могла пользоваться своими ногами. Анне почти не с кем было поговорить о состоянии дочери: «Врачей не хватает. У нас всего два педиатра, три медсестры и один офтальмолог». Долгое время она надеялась, что болезнь можно исправить хирургическим путем. Подробнее о состоянии девочки она узнала, посетив врача из российского фонда «Дорога жизни». Ей посоветовали ампутировать конечности Дарины, чтобы девочка могла пользоваться протезами. Однако необходимая Дарине операция может стоить несколько миллионов рублей – неподъемная сумма для матери-одиночки. Но врачи московского благотворительного фонда дали Анне надежду.
