Jakarta, officially known as the Special Capital Region of Jakarta, is Indonesia’s capital and largest city. Situated on the northwest coast of Java, the world’s most populous island, Jakarta is a vital economic, cultural, and political hub with a province-level status. It boasts a population of over 10 million people within a relatively small area of km² but extends into a metropolitan area that covers 7,062.5 km², including satellite cities like Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi. This makes it the largest urban area in Indonesia and the second-largest in the world, with an estimated population of 35 million as of 2022. Jakarta’s history dates back to the 4th century as Sunda Kelapa, evolving through several names and roles before becoming the bustling metropolis it is today. It was an important trading port for the Sunda Kingdom, later becoming a significant site for the Dutch East Indies when it was known as Batavia. Jakarta has been the focal point of Indonesia’s economic growth, attracting migrants from across the archipelago and making it a melting pot of cultures. The city faces significant challenges, including rapid urban growth, ecological breakdown, and flooding exacerbated by its sinking rate of up to 17 cm annually. In response to these challenges, the Indonesian government announced plans to move the capital from Jakarta to Nusantara, East Kalimantan, on Borneo Island.
