For those who follow the channel, Esther Lamandier is a well known musician. She is a French soprano and musician known for explorations in early chant and monodic music. She frequently accompany herself on the harp, vielle and portative organ. Another of her wonderful work about the Cantigas de Santa Maria is listenable here:
Lamandier was born in 1946 in Saint-Raphaël, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France; her father’s family is Jewish, from Piatra Neamț in Romania. She is a specialist in both Assyrian and Sephardic Jewish song, and the Hebrew biblical chant transcriptions of Suzanne Haïk-Vantoura.
Her works are characterized by minimalistic choices in the arrangements and to me, that I really love the motto “less is more“, her works are the proof that wonderful music doesn’t need big orchestral arrangements, especially when it comes to medieval music.
In this record, “Chansons De Toile Au Temps Du Roman De La Rose“, Esther Lamandier sings the repertoire linked to the chanson de toile: songs concerning the ladies who lived in the centuries of the famous and stupendous 13th century Roman de la Rose. The album is simply vocal, but her wonderful voice and interpretations won’t let you feel like missing instrumental accompaniment.
I wish you happy listening!
