With tropical weather conditions, surprising Asian riders, and vibrant Indonesian crowds, it’s always a charm to return to Palangkaraya, the capital of Indonesia’s Central Kalimantan province. Round 3 of the UCI World Cup threw completely different conditions to the eliminator stars than the first two races in Paris and Barcelona.
At the start of race day, Madison Boissiere from France and Edvin Lindh from Sweden sprinted to victories in the qualifying time trials. However, Lindh was among the many pre-race favorites who didn’t get through the quarter-finals. Lindh crashed, as did UCI World Champion Titouan Perrin-Ganier and Nils-Obed Riecker in their heats. European champion Ede-Karoly Molnar was also eliminated in one of the most contested heats of the quarter-finals.
In the women’s race, unique opportunities were waiting to be seized, as some of the top elite women were focusing on challenges later this season. Didi de Vries didn’t collapse under the pressure: the Dutch champion led the final heat from start to finish, winning ahead of teammate Boissiere. A well-deserved triumph for De Vries, one of the most consistent eliminator riders for years. Deekaballes Vipavee from Thailand was the surprise of the day, taking third place, while Amparo Chapa Lloret from Spain finished fourth.
The men’s final was full of drama: UCI World Cup leader Lorenzo Serres crashed shortly after the start, and Austrian champion Theo Hauser lost his chances due to a flat tire. Both riders showed their resilience by still fighting to the race finish. In front, rookie Lochlan Brown surprised the world by taking the win during his first-ever UCI World Cup start. Riyadh Hakim from Singapore achieved a career highlight by finishing second, ahead of Hauser and Serres. Oceania, Asia, and Europe were all represented on the men’s podium of the day.
Didi de Vries was in disbelief after realizing her biggest career achievement: “This means so much to me,” she smiled with joy. “This is my first-ever UCI World Cup win. It’s something huge for me. It’s very nice to achieve this after all the work I’ve put in over the years. I’m so happy!”
Rookie Lochlan Brown showed great respect for his fellow eliminator riders after his victory. “I seemed to be a bit lucky in the final,” he said. “A few things went wrong for the other guys, while I stayed patient and came through at the end. I consider that beginner’s luck, but let’s see what happens next week!”
Next Sunday, the UCI Mountain Bike Eliminator World Cup returns to the impressive Ayçiçek Bisiklet Vadisi bike stadium in Sakarya, Türkiye, for its fourth round of racing. Competition will be fierce on the physically demanding track, and a bunch of Turkish home riders are looking forward to challenging the eliminator stars.
