Cab Calloway (1907-1994) was an American singer, songwriter, bandleader, conductor and dancer. His orchestra became the house band at The Cotton Club, succeeding Duke Ellington. He became a star nationally in a short time due to the regular radio broadcasts, and became know as the “Hi-de-ho” of jazz, one of the most popular vocalists of the swing era.
In 1931 he recorded the original version of “Minnie The Moocher.” Few listeners knew that he was singing about opium use. The “hi-de-ho” call and response with the band (which was soon taken up by audiences) became his trademark and made him into a sensation. This remarkable, fully restored and remastered clip from the early 1950s shows him at his peak leading a quartet with Milt Hinton on bass and Jonah Jones on trumpet.
He reached the Billboard charts in five consecutive decades, the 1930s to the 1970s.
Calloway was the first African-American musician to sell a million records and to have a nationally syndicated radio show.
His song “Minnie the Moocher“ was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and he posthumously received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.
