Judy Garland as a Blackface Pickaninny in Everybody Sing

Judy Garland performs Swing low, Sweet Chariot as a Blackface pickaninny in Everybody Sing. Judy performed in blackface in three movies during her career; Everybody Sing (1938) , Babes in Arms (1939) and Babes on Broadway (1941) . True fans should love Judy Garland for everything else she did and not try to defend her for doing this by claiming she had no agency or sense of what was right and wrong for that time. On the other extreme, condemning her for doing it seems a bit excessive as well, when one takes everything known about her into consideration. Like all history, it’s complicated.
