Intergalactic Filaments Spin

The longest spinning structures in nature. It is many hundreds of times longer even than our Milky Way galaxy, already inconceivably bigger than our solar system. This filament is in a smoothed version of the Illustris computer simulation. The golden comets follow smoothed velocity streamlines, heading toward a galaxy at the filament’s tip (similar to actual trajectories of matter in the simulation, but not quite the same) See “Intergalactic Filaments Spin,” , MNRAS, in press Video: Miguel Aragon-Calvo Music: Samuel Aragon-Huisman
