The M-48 Mod-1 mask itself, is very versatile. The availability of several different pods allows for a multitude of configurations such as standard SCUBA or re breathers or many other custom configurations (military). Now a new pod design takes the mask into the realm of surface supplied diving.
When it would be best to use surface supplied equipment for a job, but a helmet or band mask may to too bulky or “Overkill”. The Surface Supplied M-48 Mod-1 is the perfect intermediate level of gear. The mask is more compact and lighter than a band mask, but it is perfectly balanced and extremely comfortable.
An attached side block (manifold) with all of the functions found on KMDSI helmets and band masks, is attached to the pod assembly, so this pod is a complete unit including the block, communications and regulator. All of the components are very simple and easy to maintain and repair. The lens defog system provides an additional source for breathing gas if ever needed. This feature alone puts this mask on a level, above other lightweight full face masks being used for surface supplied diving.
Even though the mask is compact and lightweight, the level of strength and durability is very impressive. Key components are made of the highest grades of stainless steel and titanium, end specialty engineering thermoplastics, and high-quality injection molded liquid silicone for high tear resistance and other chemically resistant elastomers.
The second stage regulator is a balanced downstream design nearly identical to the KMDSI balanced scuba regulator, and balanced 455 regulators. The breathing performance exceeds all standards for CE, EN 15333-1 surface supply standard including some of the lowest re-inspired C02 levels found in any full-face mask.
Communications are a 4 wire/ 4 pin marsh marine type connection with main components completely waterproof and sealed together. The microphone element is easily removed for maintenance or cleaning.
The one-way valve is attached to a 10” hose whip to the side block. The short hose allows an umbilical hose to be attached without needing any modifications to an existing umbilical hose. The main purpose of the jumper is to prevent excessive loads or pull from attaching the check valve directly to the side block.
