The complete restoration of Azeri sovereignty has taken a huge toll. More than a hundred thousand Armenians have been forced to evacuate the territory in fear of repression by the Azeri authorities. Although some Armenian citizens will remain in Nagorno-Karabakh (who have been used by the Azerbaijani media as propaganda making believe that it was the general will of the Armenian people) the reality is quite different. The streets of the cities have been practically deserted in what was once a populated region whose people had remained on the ground for centuries.
