The largest movement in the entire set of 24 Pièces de Fantaisie, Cathédrales, is a majestic Largo molto sostenuto in the key of A major. It clearly is meant to suggest the grandeur and the balanced majesty of great Gothic cathedrals. Vierne skillfully contrasts quieter interludes with full organ passages of increasing power.
