This 45 minute radio documentary entitled
“From Workhouse To Australia – Uncovering The Dramatic Story Of The Irish Famine Workhouse Girls In Australia In The Nineteenth Century”
- investigates the “Earl Grey” scheme, which ran from 1848 to 1850, and which involved the Australian authorities paying the passage for 4114 Irish famine orphan girls to leave their bleak workhouse homes in Ireland for a new life in Eastern Australia. It shows how the vast majority of Irish girls, who participated in the scheme, fulfilled the Australian dream of prosperity, having large families and also contributing greatly to Australian society.
