Off / Seed / Diablo / Slam - Our Retaliation is Legal Defense (Korean split 1997)

This is a really rare split consisting of four different metal bands from Seoul, South Korea. One reason this split appeals is for Seed, who formed in 1996 and are one of the most reputable death metal bands to come out of South Korea. The Seed songs here are different from their debut in that the vocal focus is on a more black metal shriek, but they do use occasional gutturals too. They’re solid songs but I prefer the material they’d put out after this. The Diablo and Slam songs are competent enough but are more groove/nu metal. The couple of songs by Off are brutal death metal and rule. The vocals are dry and guttural with occasional highs that sound like Lord Worm. I believe these are the only two songs ever put out by Off, which is unfortunate because they rule and are easily the best songs on the split. I wish Off would’ve put out a full-length. The split is originally ordered in a bizarre way, with songs from each band scattered across the split, so for this stream I’ve put them together by band (and by which ones most rule) but I’ve left the original track numbers so you have an idea for the original order, which is this: 1. Diablo - Oh! My God 2. Seed - 無 (Fall to the Abyss) 3. Off - 미친 닭 4. Slam - Silence 5. Diablo - My Warning Against the World 6. Off - 자판기의 슬픔 7. Seed - 회상 8. Slam - Cuttin’ Cards I believe the purpose of this split and its provocative title were to push back against censorship in Korea at the time. Cannibal Corpse in particular was notoriously censored, which is why the last page of the booklet includes a message from Cannibal Corpse to all Koreans. I’ve flashed the last page of that booklet throughout the stream. #deathmetal #deathmetallibrary #koreanmetal #koreandeathmetal #split
