Heavy floods hit the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, Brazil on January 11th 2022. Floods have been caused by 3 days of heavy rain caused rivers to overflow. Dams burst as they became overwhelmes by the volume of water. Mining operations were stopped as water filled mines. A number of towns were submerged and cut off from surrounding areas. Roads were underwater, stopping travel between towns and damaging vehicles. In rural areas, landslides blocked roads and destroyed crops, with potholes also observed. Around 20,000 residents have been evacuated following the floods, as homes become unsafe to live in. Areas particularly affected include the state capital of Belo Horizonte, as well as the towns of Juatuba and Raposos The bad weather has been caused by the La Niña weather system in the Pacific Ocean.
