About Dr. John
US-American fusion legend Mac “Dr. John“ Rebennack Jr. was born in New Orleans and embodied its exciting fusion music culture like no other musician. The Grammy-winning singer, pianist, guitarist and arranger worked with musicians such as The Rolling Stones, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin and Phil Spector. With his band, he developed a unique musical genre that united the folklore and voodoo influences of his hometown, with Cajun, African, African American, Latin American sounds and genres such as Jazz, Psychedelia, Rock’n’Roll, Blues, Zydeco and Funk. Dr. John’s discography includes a great number of albums and live collections, including “Dr. John’s Gumbo“ (1972), “In The Right Place“ (1973), “Creole Moon“ (2001), “Ske-Dat-De-Dat... Spirit Of Satch“ (2014), “Live at Montreux“ (1995), “The Dr. John Anthology“ (1993) and the Grammy ©-winning albums “Goin’ Back to New Orleans“ (1992) and “Locked Down“ (2012).
His debut album “Gris-Gris“ (1968), which includes the famous songs “I Walk On Guilded Splinters“ and “Mama Roux“ is considered one of the great, musically unique masterpieces of popular music, named in Rolling Stone’s and Pitchfork’s greatest albums lists. In 2007, Dr. John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Dr. John died in June 2019.
