June11 - Who Is Still Dreaming?

〰️ STRLP-005 I remember a sense of wonder whilst listening to Peer Gynt (by Henrik Ibsen & Edvard Grieg - 1875), when I was a boy aged about 13 or 14. “Åses død” has been playing in my head for many, many years. The song deals with the death of Åse, Peer Gynt’s mother. It’s a sad and sweeping piece. I was only able to give it my own interpretation in 2006. First 9/11 had to happen and pervade me. Ever since, millions of people are fleeing and dangerous fools are taking power. It’s a bad dream, alas. The lyrics have been recorded with a text-to-speech-application. Who Is Still Dreaming is related but in a way also contradictory to ‘Who By Fire’, a song by Leonard Cohen. In that song, the question is raised who will decide who and when and how we’ll have to go. ‘Who Is Still Dreaming?’ wants to ask who, despite all strain, is strong enough to keep dreaming, living without fear and embracing the future. ----------------------- The third release on STROOM 〰 is introvert music gold by Jan Van den Broeke, the man behind the eighties diy/lofi wave outfits Absent Music, June11 and The Misz. Van den Broeke, now a renowned architect, self released most of his music on cassettes and CDR’s. Recently some of his stuff was reissued through labels such as EE Tapes or Walhalla Records, but this is his first carreer spanning compilation, covering over 30 years of music, carefully selected by Nosedrip and Jan himself. Van den Broeke tried to cover the gap between ambient and song, with music assembled in layers, using electronic and accoustic instruments and samples from radio, tv, field recordings, old tapes, movies and so on. As a youngster of his time & place, he was heavily influenced by the output of labels like Les Disques du Crépuscule and Crammed, but the compilation shows an intense research towards a personal sound. PS1: My third release is numbered STRLP-005. I know that’s a bit weird, but it totally makes sense to me and that’s the most important thing, trust me. Plus with the arrival of F/W 2017-2018, all will be clear. PS2: At the same time EE Tapes will release a CD DVD of the audiovisual exposition “CHEZ RENEE“. It also comes as a digital bonus with STRLP-005. “Chez Renée“ was a project of Renée Lodewyckx. The music for the opening of the exhibition, act and video was composed between October 87 - February 88. The premiere took place on 19 March 88 at Avantgrade Gallerij - Antwerp (B). released May 8, 2017 Jan wants to thank: All fellow musicians on this record. Everyone who inspired this album.
