The 2024 rainy season in Indonesia began unusually early and is already frightening in its intensity. Heavy rainfall has caused a series of floods, landslides and mudslides in the Indonesian province of Papua. At least 43 people were killed and more than 100 others were injured by the extreme weather conditions, the local emergency management agency said.
As a result of record rains in the Wamena Highlands in West Papua, the Uwe River overflowed its banks, flooding residential buildings. So, in 3 days, about 600 mm of precipitation fell in this area. As a result of numerous landslides, several dozen buildings were destroyed.
Floods affected large areas and damaged at least 3,000 houses. More than 10,000 people were forced to seek refuge.
Disaster management authorities are still carrying out evacuations in affected areas and distributing relief supplies and drinking water.
