Moving over to Bangladesh, where a fire at the country’s biggest Rohingya refugee camp has left more than 8,000 without shelter.
The head of Ukhiya Fire Station said that the fire began on Saturday night at Kutupalong camp in Cox’s Bazar and spread fast, leaving about 1,040 shelters destroyed.
Although the cause of the fire is yet unknown, refugee commissioner Mizanur Rahman on Sunday said there are suspicions of arson. Previously, a massive fire in the same camp in March 2021, killed at least 15 and destroyed over 10,000 shelters.
Kutupalong refugee camp is currently the largest refugee camp in the world with around one million Rohingya refugees. Rohingya Muslims have been flowing in to Bangladesh since Myanmar’s military crackdown in 2017.
