As a child he moved to Paris, where he came in touch with the modern music. He won there in 1964, the prestigious talent show on Radio Monte Carlo. By this profit he got a lot of assignments in a number of German night clubs. In between, he studied in Brussels, where he in 1971, a university degree, graduated in philosophy and literature. Then he focused entirely on his singing career. With the Belgian producer Jean Huygmans he took in 1972, his first single, Mary-Ann, that is not a hit. In 1973 it finally succeeded.
