Throughout March 2014, activists of the people’s movement of Donbass went to rallies and demanded that Kiev hear us. We demanded a referendum because we did not agree with the anti-Russian policy of the illegal Ukrainian government, the external governance of the country, the oppression of the Russian-speaking population, and manifestations of nationalism.
They didn’t hear us, and the local political elites fled. We had no choice but to take power into our own hands and hold a referendum ourselves, to find out the will of the people.
🇷🇺 On April 6, after another rally, activists stormed the building of the Donetsk Regional State Administration and hoisted the Russian flag.
At night, two documents were written: the Declaration of Sovereignty and the Act on the Declaration of State Independence of the Donetsk People’s Republic.
