Tiger II vs KV-5 | Impact of the Explosive Cavity on the Projectile | Penetration Simulation
Simulation of AP shell from the 88mm Tiger II gun hitting turret front armor of KV-5 tank.
Pzgr 39/43 ( APCBCHE shell) at 980 m/s
vs
180mm RHA at 15° turret armor (260 BHN)
KwK 43 gun muzzle velocity - 1000m/s (Pzgr 39) 980 m/s at 0.2 km
calculation time ~100h
Pzgr rot video:
In the community tab I posted an example photo of the state of the shell after passing through the armor from the American tests.
The complex system of forces acting on the projectile in this simulation makes the state of the projectile similar to what we see in the tests at 30° obliquity (projectile broken at high velocity). The complex system of forces results from the fact that the plate is not equally supported on all sides (it is best to understand this by looking at the graphic that was placed somewhere in the middle of the video about Pzgr rot).
To sum up the last poll. I expected the Pzgr rot to shatter, while the shouldn’t shatter for a simple plate. In that case the would explode and do more damage. However, the KV-5 turret doesn’t have large flat armor area, so for this situation it’s unlikely that the would be able to explode inside, so due to caliber and fragmentation the would be a worse option for crew.
